Opinions on potential periodic competition idea...

    A'llo,

I know I've not been as active lately as I usually am. Been busy watching TV (mostly) among other things, but that's not why I'm writing this thread. I spoke to Thomas about it (via email) & he pretty much gave me a nod of approval - actually he wasn't all that fussed either way, but... er... yeah.

Anyway... here's a query form for me to see what you lot think about it. http://goo.gl/forms/XwWGA6AYJJ

Quick note #1 (regarding prizes): I was thinking that to make things more interesting that we would allow the overall winner to select a steam key / gift from a list of premium games we have available (or they can select 2 games from the bargain bin if they prefer) & one or two runners up can select a game of their choice from the bargain bin. The winner would also set the theme & rules for the next competition.

Quick note #2: if enough people like the sound of a regular competition then I would be most grateful to anyone willing to donate any unwanted steam gifts / keys &/or duplicate keys you have lying around towards the competition. I'll donate some stuff as well when I can & I'll ask if any of the developers (Daedalic & other devs with released VS games) would be willing to donate a few keys our way.

Update #1: I spoke to Thomas earlier about some other potential prizes & allowing people who don't own a license for VS to be able to enter. So an optional prize for non-license owners could be a free indie license instead of a game.

P.S: if you wouldn't mind leaving a little message here to let me know you've filled it out, it would be much appreciated, cheers. wink

I haven't understood, what this potential periodic competition idea really means. An user-game in seasons?

haha. Sorry mate. I tried to think of a word meaning frequent that actually fit the topic. Periodic as in Periodical was about the only one that came to mind.

Basically it just means a regularly run competition. Winner gets to pick a game from a list of whatever keys we happen to have laying around & they would also get to decide the rules & theme for the next competition.

All submissions would be voted for by the public. All games would be hosted on the wiki server (providing David gives me permission, if not then I'll sort out a dropbox account or something to host them), All games will be permanently linked on a page in the wiki.

Hope this helps clarify things a little better. smile

I like the competition games on the start page, but their source codes are not well suitable to download (200 up to 500 MB). I remember the winner's game should use as the officiel Visionaire demo game put into the download packet. I think you have to limit the game's size for that and for every competition.
The idea is a good one, but I remember how I did my own games: it takes a lot of time. There is nothing I want to show in only one month :-) Especially I attach value to make well-done character animations. So it make sense to start a new competition every three months, but have a look on the steps of progress during time. I like this "progress threads" in the forum - show how to work hard to make your goal... :-)

I'm not expecting people to create anything special in a couple weeks or a month (or whatever time is decided upon). Think of it as a training exercise to help increase productivity & workflow, besides learning to work to a set time limit with specified rules - just like you might have to do if you were working for an AAA game development studio / company.

I suppose you could think of the rules as goals, like you've mentioned in your reply.

By the way... the last competition was a one off, which ran for at least 2 or 3 months (I forgot exactly how long it lasted) & it was expected that people tried to do their best, this competition idea on the other hand is just a bit fun & the maximum minimum room requirement will be limited to maximum of up to 3 rooms / scenes to make it fair & keep the file sizes & so on down.

Did I? Maybe... & if I did, then it's only because I can. grin

P.S: it should be "in" not "ain". I've no idea what's going on with my typing / spelling the day. I seem to keep typing things wrong & not even noticing.

Yeah, s.th. like "opinon" :-) But it's ok, mistakes (in English) are normal to me. I think, too much television isn't good for the brain... ;-)
